Set up a role and its permissions

Give each team the access needed for its job.

Before you begin

  • Select the intended project.
  • Use an account with permission to create or edit roles.
  • Decide which parts of the building this role should view, modify, or access.

Step by step

  1. Open Roles

Choose Add role to create a custom role. To update an existing custom role, open it from the role list.

  2. Name the role

Use a clear job name that your team will recognize. If you choose a reference role, review the copied permissions before saving.

  3. Choose capabilities

Review the permission matrix by area. View allows visibility; Modify groups the available create, update, delete, and assign actions; Access covers the resource's access capability.

  4. Review and save

Check every selected area and save. Enabling Modify or Access also enables View; clearing View clears the related Modify and Access selections.

  5. Use the role

Select this role when creating an invitation or managing a member. Creating a role alone does not assign it to everyone in the project.

You’re ready when

The custom role is available for project membership and carries the permissions you selected.

Troubleshooting

A built-in role cannot be edited
Predefined roles are not editable through the normal role flow. Create a custom role with the intended permissions instead.
A role name is rejected
Use a distinct custom name. Admin, Device, Member, Owner, and Super Admin are reserved names.

Common questions

Why did another permission turn on?
Modify and Access depend on View in the matrix. The editor enables View with them so the selection stays consistent.
